Worship

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.
And what does the LORD require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8
New International Version

Worship at the Open Table gives the opportunity for a diverse community to be together as we open ourselves to God. In worship we are united by our hunger, our human brokenness, our desire for positive change in our lives and in the life of the world, and our praise for God who creates.

Sometimes in our worship we experience forgiveness and the power to forgive. Sometimes we share joys and sometimes sorrow. Often we sense God’s grace and sometimes we see a new way through the wilderness. We draw strength from honest relationship with each other. Even though we are very different in ages, cultures, abilities, genders, and many other ways, we sense a unity in God’s purpose and present.

We say, “we come from many tribes.” But, we come from a common need and responding to a common desire for the sacred and for positive change.

More than anything else in worship, we want a real encounter with the divine and with each other.

What happens in Sunday morning worship

Every Sunday is different, as is every season at the Open Table. But, worship at the OTC generally includes:

  • Folks are usually present from at least four continents: North America, Latin America, Africa, and Asia, and from the wide spectrum of human culture and need.

  • We join in singing and centering ourselves through praise and prayer for both our needs and the needs of the community.

  • We hear ancient scripture and stories and both a children’s and adult reflection on those scriptures in the light of our daily lives. The ‘sermon’ is generally given by Pastor Duane Clinker, but equally important are times in which many others in the congregation offer the reflection and testimony of daily life following the Way of Jesus. Often photos, videos, multimedia or objects are used in the reflection.

  • We celebrate open communion for all who wish to receive this sense and taste of the Living Lord.

  • We unite in a circle of prayer.

  • We share resources and look forward to opportunities to serve the causes of mercy and justice in the week.

  • Coffee and light refreshment is offered, before and after worship time, and often free bread goods are on hand for any who wish to take them home.

Sunday morning worship begins at 10:30 and usually lasts until about 11:45.

Dress is informal. Nothing extra is needed but an open spirit.
