Project Outreach

Project Outreach was established in the early 1970s by the former Washington Park United Methodist Church to provide emergency assistance to its surrounding neighbors in times of need. At that time, the church was instrumental in helping refugees from Southeast Asia settle into the neighborhood. We matched refugee families with families from all over Rhode Island to help the new arrivals with all of their basic needs. We also provided shelter, clothing, food, friendship, and taught new arrivals how to survive in a culture very different from the one they had left.

Since then, Project Outreach has added a food pantry, bread distribution, and utility and rental assistance programs. We have offered many educational programs for adults and children and continue to seek ways to expand these endeavors by providing prescription help for the uninsured, exercise programs in our gym, and ESL and GED programs. The mission of Project Outreach is to work with and through churches, community residents, other groups, and all people of good will to rebuild and renew life in the Washington Park neighborhood and the surrounding area. Food is provided to 340 families and over 1,000 individuals per week. Project Outreach is a primary entry point for all the ministries of the Open Table of Christ. Such programs include social services, medical care, education and training programs. People from the neighborhood and Open Table gather together to share and serve one another. Individual lives and the community are renewed. To volunteer, contribute, or get your church or organization involved, please call Clarice Gotherg, volunteer coordinator, or Jessey at 401.941.2212 for more information. Donations of cash, food, clothing, school supplies, and toys are always welcome.

To get assistance for food, Washington Park residents hours are Wednesdays, 8:00 am to 11:00 am. South Providence residents hours are Thursdays, 8:00 to 11:00 am.
